One of the most stressful things you have to deal with when you have a job interview coming up is deciding what to wear. It might not be at the forefront of your mind, but you’ll regret it if you don’t think about it until 10 minutes before you have to leave. It was easier in the past, when you just had to wear a suit whatever the job. Over the years though, the professional world and the way interviews take place have changed.\u00a0<\/p>

Startups, and other companies with a younger workforce, don’t require the same dress code as a conventional company, where your prospective bosses might be older. What you wear communicates a message to the interviewer, and can define a large part of their first impression, which could be crucial. Some companies still have a strict and formal dress code. Law firms, senior financial companies, and banks, to name a few. Those kinds of jobs require you to dress smartly and professionally, to show your interviewer that you\u2019re a responsible, hard-working person.\u00a0<\/p>

In this case, the suit is still king. A suit and tie for men, a skirt or pantsuit for women, a\u00a0shirt<\/a>, and smart shoes. Some of these types of companies are relaxing things a little, so you can wear an open-necked shirt, or chinos instead of slacks. Avoid the suit, but a hoodie and jeans isn\u2019t much better. You want to find the middle ground\u2013 a relaxed shirt is fine, but a smart polo will also work, or a nice sweater. Go for a fairly formal skirt or pants, like chinos, and shoes or smart sneakers.
