The Origin Of The Ugly Christmas Sweater

So, who exactly do we have to thank for the Ugly Christmas Sweater trend and what are its’ origins?

These merry monstrosities first reared their heads in the ‘50s and were characterized by their discrete and artistic designs. Far removed from today’s ugly christmas jumpers, they were known as “Jingle Bell Sweaters” and were not as gaudy as the ones that we have come to love to loathe.

Popularized by sitcoms and the media in the ‘80s and ‘90s, these quirky pieces were embraced with open arms and a new christmas craze was born. Sitcom character Cliff Huxtable from the Cosby show would cause viewers to clutch their pearls each episode at his outlandish and ostentatious ugly christmas sweaters. And who can forget Mark Darcy’s out-of-place reindeer sweater in Bridget Jones’s Diary!

However, the turning point for this christmas trend appears to take place in 2001. The duo Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch claim to have given birth to Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties after a fateful coordination of ugly peguin sweaters sparked the idea.

As the adage goes, ugliness is in the eye of the beholder. You may be asking yourself what exactly is an Ugly Christmas Sweater? Is mine too tacky or worse still, not tacky enough?! What makes a christmas sweater ugly?

An Ugly Christmas sweater is any Christmas-themed sweater or knitwear that is deemed guady or mismatched. The ideal jumper should be laden with embellishments – jingle bells, tinsel, elves, christmas lights, reindeers- or adorned with a tacky phrase. The stronger the reaction invoked by your eye-sore, the better!

This trend has evolved to such an extent that it has been granted it’s own national day. That’s right – each year, individual don their horrendous holiday bests on the third Friday of December. National Ugly Sweater Day 2023 will fall on Friday the 15th of Decemeber, giving you plenty of time to organize your ugly christmas sweater party.
